Safe zones for vertical video: keep text and faces clear of buttons

Short answerKeep faces and text away from the right edge and the bottom of a vertical video, where platforms put buttons and captions.

Short-video apps place buttons, captions and account names over your video. If your face or text sits under them, viewers miss it.

The general rule

Leave empty margin at the top, the bottom and along the right edge. Those areas are the most likely to be covered. Exactly how much changes by platform and over time, so check the current layout in the app you post to.

Keep faces in the middle

Frame yourself so your head sits comfortably in the central part of the vertical frame, not hard against the top.

Put text where it is readable

Place titles and captions inside the central area and keep them short. Test by posting a private draft and looking at it on a phone.

Use guides while you film

A grid on your camera helps you keep subjects centred. Drawing the guide areas on your preview is something we are planning (see below).

Dynamic Safe Zones are a planned feature of our app. Platform layouts change, so any guide would be a guide only.
