Filming vertical and landscape from one session

Short answerFrame with the action in the centre, leave space around you, and film each important line twice if you need both shapes.

Many creators want one version for short-form apps and another for YouTube. Filming everything twice takes time. Here are the options.

Option 1: film landscape, crop to vertical

A vertical frame cut from a landscape video keeps only around a third of the width, so you need to stay near the middle and leave room around you. The result also has fewer pixels, so shoot in the highest quality you can.

Option 2: film vertical, use it as vertical only

If most of your audience is on short-form apps, film vertical and accept that landscape needs a separate take.

Option 3: film twice, quickly

Record the vertical version first, then rotate the phone and repeat. Using a script or teleprompter makes the second take quick.

Plan your framing

  • Keep the subject centred.
  • Keep important text out of the edges.
  • Leave extra space above your head.

A landscape-video feature is built in our app and still being tested on real devices. It is not released yet and details may change.
